Artist Gallery Talk November 4th

Side by Side
New works by Lin Johnson and Phil Putnam

September 24-November 30

Artist Talk:  November 4th,  5:30 P.M.

April Price Project Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibit, Side by Side, featuring the work of two artists:  Lin Johnson and Phil Putnam.  The couple has been working 'side by side' for forty years, developing their vocabulary, personal iconography, and artistic style in different media.

Lin works in clay and focuses on creating small sculptures and vessels, often in series. While drawing from the natural environment, she addresses the relationship between two-dimensional  and three-dimensional forms, a process which involves construction and deconstruction. She has explored and utilized the human face in a playful ways reducing features down to a bare minimum of simple geometric shapes that still evoke  personality.  Often working in pairs, she explores the conversation between objects; as well as the viewer.

Phil's series of drawings and paintings began some time ago as abstractions of the landscape derived partially from commuting between Los Alamos and Albuquerque for many years. Much of his subject matter in the work was inspired by peripheral images constantly entering his field of vision while commuting.  In 2015 he was awarded a Wurlitzer Foundation Grant, giving him uninterrupted time to explore the abstract landscape in painting, while also beginning a series of ethereal drawings inspired by Taos and his studio experience up North.

There is a stylistic dialogue between Lin and Phil which ruminates in their imagery.  The language of their forms converse however the atmospheric constructs of Putnam's expand off the canvas, while Johnson's earthly figurative foms contain an absolute with each work, as well as, in her grouped installation.

There is definitely a dialogue between Lin and Phil which is reflected in their imagery.  However, their interests, as reflected in the direction of their work, is clearly different as well. We will leave that to the viewer to interpret

April Price Project Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition with four artists whose work brings together the
metaphor of the artist’s perception in the embedding space of landscape. In these artworks, the signifiers and
metaphors of the constructed pictorial plane are presented in the genre of landscape. The show implies a
mechanism or position with in a framework that is both active and passive, distant and intimate.
Artists Cindy Dominguez, Elaine Roy, Mary Ann Strandell, and Susan Zimmerman work with painting, drawing, photography, prints, and mixed media. The spatial intersections of these artists work come
together to form the Embedded Landscape.

Cindy Dominguez is an artist and teacher living and working in Albuquerque, NM. Her most
recent photographic series of internal landscapes pose subjects as dreamed
sequences with hand-sewn thread into the photographic image. These combinations
act to sublimate altered states of the viewer and the maker.

Elaine Roy is an artist living and working in Albuquerque, NM. The spectrum of her work combines encaustic,
oil, and graphite with photographic elements. There is a physicality to her earthy painted topographies.
Yet it is through her intuitive process of layering and building, re-drawing and excavating levels that
reveal traces of present and past landscapes. The photographic segments act as demarkations within these compositions.

Mary Ann Strandell’s works are a movable terrain between image, media, and their myriad histories. Her
work in Embedded Landscape is an assemblage of imagery from her outdoor oils with drawings and
algorithmic components. The subject is the intersection of place, both wilderness and urban . She works
in the NYC area, and travels often to work in New Mexico with her roving Outdoor Studio practice.

The artist Susan Zimmerman lives and works in Corrales, NM. In her fluid, calligraphic abstractions
Zimmerman uses handmade papers with Japanese sumi ink, collage and acrylic. She considers
these spacious works as a changing landscape of layers. There is a sense of the arabesque with
aspects of earth and plant life in her constructs.

April Price Project Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibit Visual Dialog. It Features photography and mixed media works by artists David and Jo Antreasian. Opening February 20 to May 20, 2016, Albuquerque NM.

Having a shared life has created a visual arts dialog for artists David and Jo Antreasian. Working in separate studios but sharing visual ideas daily, the artists have each evolved their own uniquely personal styles. While both artists utilize photographic tools, the work often reflects an alternative viewpoint to traditional process.
David began hand painting silver gelatin photographs in early 1970 and his work today still reflects his passion for altered photography and muted color. The new work utilizes archival digital media and the subject matter is often carefully illuminated still-life composition with a surreal quality or sense of mystery.
Jo has been a painter and photographer for the past 25 years. In her new mixed media work one can see the eye of the photographer and the hand of the painter as she creates compositions which are bold, lyrical, and often abstract. Her limited edition prints are hand generated using a process where images are transferred to paper and panels manually.
